TikTok has announced a new photo-sharing app that some are calling an “Instagram killer.” While Instagram insists people prefer videos, TikTok seems to think otherwise. They’re creating a platform similar to Instagram circa 2016, focusing solely on photos and stories.

What is TikTok’s New Photo App?

Screenshots of the new TikTok app, possibly named TikTok Notes or TikTok Photos, suggest it’s designed for everyone—from world travelers to food bloggers, or anyone who enjoys sharing their life through photos. This new platform could offer a simpler way to enjoy and discover photo posts, much like the old Instagram.

Why Not Integrate Into TikTok?

Given TikTok’s success with carousels, which perform better than on Instagram, why create a separate app? TikTok carousels have already shown there’s a demand for photo content. So, why complicate things with another platform? Instagram’s struggles stem from overcomplicating its offerings. Adding another photo-only app raises the question: Do we need another photo platform?

Remember Vero?

Anyone recall Vero, the supposed Instagram killer from 2018? Despite a brief resurgence and praise from photographers, it never quite took off. Even influencers like Peter McKinnon couldn’t drive significant traffic. This highlights a key issue—traffic and reach are crucial for success on social media. Without them, a platform remains a hobbyist’s tool.

The Current Landscape

Instagram has evolved, mixing photos and videos. Ultra-short reels, essentially long photos with captions, are performing well. This hybrid content could indicate that pure photo platforms might not be necessary. However, TikTok’s move could revive interest in photo content, providing an alternative for creators who prefer photos over videos.

Would You Use It?

Would you download and use a dedicated TikTok photo app? Some argue it’s unnecessary. Should Reels have been a standalone app, keeping Instagram focused on photos? Competition and innovation are always beneficial, driving platforms to improve.

Final Thoughts Even with new platforms, Instagram remains a strong option for photographers. Creators like Konsti are thriving by optimizing their content for algorithms and audience preferences. If you’re a photographer wanting to grow, you can still succeed on Instagram.
